Somatic Experiencing

Getting to Know Somatic Experiencing.

Somatic experiencing™ is a body-based therapeutic approach that focuses on releasing trauma stored in the nervous system.

Developed by Peter Levine, it works with the body's natural ability to heal by helping people notice and gradually discharge physical sensations, tensions, and energy patterns that may be stuck from past overwhelming or traumatic experiences.

Rather than focusing primarily on talking, somatic experiencing™ emphasises tuning into bodily sensation, the breath, and movement to restore the nervous system's resilience and natural balance.

How it Works

Somatic Experiencing operates through gentle observation and tracking of your body's responses in real-time. During sessions, your therapist will guide you to notice subtle changes in sensation, temperature, muscle tension, or breathing patterns without forcing anything to happen.

The process uses specific techniques like titration (working with manageable amounts of activation) and pendulation (naturally moving between states of expansion and contraction). This allows your nervous system to complete interrupted responses at its own pace, building capacity for self-regulation.

Sessions might involve simple movements, shifts in posture, or exploring what feels supportive in your environment. The focus remains on present-moment awareness, helping you develop a new relationship with your body's signals and building resilience for daily life.

 FAQs

  • Many people start with limited body awareness - this is completely normal. Part of the SE process involves gently rebuilding this connection at a pace that feels safe for you.

  • Yes. While other approaches may focus on changing thoughts or processing memories, SE works directly with the nervous system's physical responses, allowing the body to lead the healing process.

  • This varies greatly between individuals. Some people notice shifts within a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing work over months. Your nervous system determines the pace - there's no rushing the process.

  • No. SE works with your current bodily responses rather than requiring you to revisit traumatic events in detail. Healing happens through present-moment awareness, not through re-experiencing past trauma.
